Sink and Cooktop Cutout Planning

Choosing sink, faucet and cooktop models early and planning the openings so the stone is cut right the first time.

Cutouts are the most expensive mistakes in stone because there is no undo button. If a sink arrives after the stone is cut and it does not match the opening, the top may have to be reworked or replaced. Good planning means choosing the sink, faucet and cooktop before templating and giving the fabricator exact specifications. In Nashville, we ask for model numbers, spec sheets and the actual products on site whenever possible.

We discuss sink type, such as undermount, drop-in or farmhouse, and how each affects the edge and the reveal. We confirm faucet hole spacing and whether you want soap dispensers, air switches or filtered water faucets. For cooktops, we check clearances and the manufacturer cutout dimensions. We also look at support and reinforcement around each opening, because a large cutout weakens the stone if it is not planned well. If a product is still on order, we ask for its installation guide and a confirmed model number in writing, because a few millimeters of difference between models can mean a recut. Late changes are the most common reason stone has to be remade, so we gently push for decisions before templating day.

Choose products first

Sink, faucet and cooktop models should be chosen before templating so the openings match exactly.

Sink style effects

Undermount, drop-in and farmhouse sinks affect edge profile, reveal and the stone around the opening.

Faucet holes

We confirm the number and spacing of holes for faucets, soap dispensers and other accessories.

Reinforcement

Openings concentrate stress. We plan where the stone needs reinforcement and where seams should avoid cutouts.

Questions

Cutout Planning FAQ

When should I choose my sink?

Before templating, so the opening matches. Ideally the sink is on site on template day.

Can I change the sink later?

Only if the new one fits the existing opening, so choose first.

How many faucet holes do I need?

It depends on the faucet and accessories. We confirm with your product specs.

Can you cut for any cooktop?

Yes, using the manufacturer spec sheet.

Will a big sink weaken the stone?

Not when it is planned with proper support and seam placement.
