What templating is
Templating is the process of capturing the exact shape and size of your counters before the stone is cut. The installer measures every wall, corner and cutout, records the position of the sink and cooktop and confirms edges, overhangs and seams. The result, a template, becomes the pattern the fabricator uses.
Because walls are rarely straight, a template made on site is far more accurate than a drawing.
When it happens
Templating takes place after the cabinets are installed and level. If the cabinets are still being built or adjusted, the template can be wrong. If your project includes new cabinets, make sure the installer templates only when they are done.
If you are replacing counters on existing cabinets, templating usually happens before the old tops are removed or immediately after.
How it is done
Modern installers use digital measuring tools and sometimes laser devices, along with physical templates made from thin strips for tricky shapes. Photos are taken of the room and the walls. Every detail is recorded, including outlets, windows and appliances.
The process typically takes a few hours for an average kitchen.
Decisions to make on the day
Be ready to confirm the sink and faucet, the cooktop model, overhang depths, edge profile, backsplash height and seam placement. Having your products on site, or exact model numbers, avoids mistakes.
This is also the time to ask about pattern direction, since it affects how the stone looks.
How to prepare your kitchen
Clear the counters and the area around the cabinets. Empty the sink base if it needs access. Make sure there is room to work and that pets are secured. Leave appliances in place unless instructed otherwise.
If you have a farmhouse sink or special equipment, have it available.
What happens after templating
The template goes to the fabricator, who plans the layout on the slab, cuts the stone, shapes the edges and polishes. This takes days to a couple of weeks. Your installer should give you a date for installation and let you know if anything changes.
Do not change your sink or cooktop after templating without checking, because that can mean redoing the cutout.
Common templating mistakes
The most common mistakes are templating before the cabinets are level, not knowing the sink model, forgetting an overhang for seating and not discussing seams. A good installer asks the right questions and double checks.
If you are unsure about something, say so. It is easier to fix on paper than in stone.
Be home on template day, have your sink and cooktop details ready and confirm seams and overhangs before the stone is cut.
