How to Prepare Your Kitchen for Granite Installation

A practical checklist for template day and installation day: what to clear, who needs to be home and how to keep your kitchen running.

Before template day

Make sure cabinets are installed, secured and level. Choose your sink, faucet and cooktop and have the model numbers or products ready. Decide on edges, backsplash height and any overhangs. Clear the counters so the installer can reach every surface.

If you are unsure, call before the visit. A few minutes of planning avoids mistakes.

On template day

Be home if you can, since the installer will confirm details with you. Keep pets away from the work area and make sure there is a clear path from the door to the kitchen. Expect a few hours.

Ask questions about seams, edges and timing.

Between template and installation

While the stone is fabricated, avoid changing your sink or cooktop without telling the installer. Complete any painting or cabinet work, and plan the water shutoff and plumbing if needed. Confirm your installation date.

Arrange where you will wash dishes and prepare meals for a day or two.

Before installation day

Empty the cabinets under the sink and along the counter runs, since they will be accessed. Move fragile items, plants and décor away. Cover or remove items near the work area.

Leave a clear route and parking space for the crew.

On installation day

The crew will protect floors, remove old tops if included, set the new stone and seal it. Expect some noise and dust. Stay out of the way but be available. Make sure someone is home to approve placement and sign off.

The job typically takes most of a day for an average kitchen.

After the install

Avoid heavy use and placing heavy items for the first day while the adhesive cures. Wait for the plumber to reconnect the sink if needed. Follow care instructions, including the water test for sealer.

Walk the kitchen with the crew and note anything that needs attention.

Living without a kitchen briefly

Plan a few simple meals that do not need a sink or counter. A cooler, paper plates and a small table can help. Keep a spare water supply handy.

With a good plan, the disruption is short and the result lasts for years.

Our advice in one sentence

Choose products early, clear the space and plan a simple day or two without the sink.
